The Brazilian coach Gilson Paulo will be responsible for leading the National Nzalang in the African Cup of Nations, which will begin on January 21 to February 12, 2012. The Newly-appointed Brazilian coach Gilson Paulo has promised to make history with co-hosts Equatorial Guinea at the Africa Cup of Nations despite having less than three weeks to work with the team.
On Monday, the 62-year-old former Vasco da Gama coach replaced Frenchman Henri Michel, who quit his post for the second time.
He is the third Brazilian to handle the National Nzalang after Antonio Dumas in 2003 and Jordan de Freitas in 2006.
Equatorial Guinea are drawn in a relatively tough first round group that also houses tournament favourites Senegal, Zambia and Libya.
However, Paulo, who will work with a physical trainer from Brazil, said he is confident he will make history with the tournament co-hosts notwithstanding the fact he has less than three weeks to work with the team.
A professional coach for the past 18 years, he said that it was always his wish to work in Africa and so will use this chance as a stepping stone to establish himself on the continent.
Equatorial Guinea, who open the 2012 Nations Cup on January 21 against Libya, will play Bafana Bafana of South Africa in a friendly on Friday to inaugurate the new stadium in the country’s second major city of Bata.
