Intenational msic star Akon is coming to Zimbabwe for a concert which organisers hope will draw the music icon's fans from the whole of Southern Africa. The US-born Senegalese singer-songwriter cum producer is set to perform at the 60 000 seater National Sports in Harare on September 4.
The concert is being organized by Zimswag, a company composed of Zimbabweans based in the United Kingdom. Clive Mutyasira one of the organisers of the event confirmed the deal to bring Akon had been sealed.
'Zimswag Productions, working with Stik Music International and Hotlike Fire Productions are delighted to confirm that the world's number one musician Akon will be coming to Zimbabwe for a once off concert at the National Sports Stadium scheduled on the evening of the 4th of September 2010,' said Mutyasira, who was involved in bringing top R'N' B artiste Joe Thomas to Harare recently.
Mutyasira said ZimSwag was planning to lure prominent artists as well as music fans from the whole of Southern Africa. 'We are looking for outstanding artistes from across Southern Africa to perform alongside Akon. The show is not for Zimbabweans alone but the whole region, that is why we chose the spacious national sports stadium as the venue' Mutyasira said all the modalities for the Akon concert are cast in stone.
'The performance contracts with the artsite have been signed, the bookings for the show venue have been confirmed and the National Arts Council Authorisation has been obtained,' he said.
Music analysts in Zimbabwe believe Akon's concert could match some of the greatest live shows staged by international artistes like Bob Markley and Bruce Springstein live shows in Harare in the early 80's.
In recent times, Zimbabwe has played host to many international music starts such as Jamaican Reggae Artist Sizzla Kalonje, American R'NB star Joe Thomas as well as leading gospel music troupe Hillsong.
Akon (29) is regarded as one of the most successful and versatile R&B singers of the 21st century, grossing over 30 million dollars a year according to Forbes Magazine.
He rose to prominence in 2004 following the release of 'Locked Up', the first single from his debut album Trouble.
His second album, Konvicted, earned him a Grammy Award nomination for the single 'Smack That'. He has since found two record labels, Konvict Muzik and Kon Live Distribution.
Akon often sings hooks for other artists and is currently accredited with over 300 guest appearances and 40 Billboard Hot 100 songs.
He is the first solo artist to hold both the number one and two spots simultaneously on the Billboard Hot 100 charts twice. He has had 6 Grammy Awards nominations and has produced many hits for artists such as Lady Gaga, Colby O'Donis and Leona Lewis.
